Google Ads tROAS Update
On 17/08/26 Google is changing how budget limited campaigns handle target based bid strategies like tROAS & tCPA.
The Google algorithm will steer performance precisely back to the target you set; stripping away the “over performance” buffer some accounts have quietly relied on.
3(takeaways) on how this will reshape Google account set up…
Sloppy direction ≠ decent outcomes
Automation previously (occasionally) provided a safety net where budget constrained campaigns with a target CPA of £10 could over perform and deliver a £8 actual CPA for example. After 17th August, those campaigns will drift up closer to the £10 target if no action is taken. The target field is now the literal direction > the machine optimises consistently to the target you set.
Strong data + commercial logic = £%gains
What ROAS should a campaign actually run at? That is a margin, stock, incrementality, NPROAS, etc question. Blanket targets are a liability across diverse regional markets > product ranges > Individual SKUs. Use Google AI to act as an amplifier to your business performance; use tools such as the recently launched Bid Target Adjustment Tool to review historical performance and update targets.
Delegate the execution > Own the strategic direction
The gap exposed isn’t platform execution; it’s knowing your true business targets. This update impacts Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen & Travel campaigns. (Watch out for Brand campaigns specifically if you are running them, which natively over perform and might be hit the hardest). Google will not automatically adjust your bidding targets or budgets for you. Bids must dynamically reflect reality and requires alignment with wider business operations; from supply chain health and stock depth to shifting regional and product margins.
